FOUNDATION OF THE AUGUST REINERS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY

The origins of the HEGEMANN GROUP date back to November 1, 1914, when August Reiners Bauunternehmung was founded. The company specializes in civil engineering work such as track, earthworks, sewer and concrete construction.

CREATION OF THE HEGEMANN GROUP

From now on, Detlef Hegemann continues to develop the company’s fortunes under his sole responsibility. AUGUST REINERS Bauunternehmung GmbH and DETLEF HEGEMANN GmbH are now part of the newly formed HEGEMANN GROUP.

SCHÄLERBAU

1983

SCHÄLERBAU BECOMES PART OF THE GROUP OF COMPANIES

The HEGEMANN GROUP takes over Schälerbau Berlin GmbH, which was founded by Hermann Schäler in 1880, and expands its range of services to include building construction, turnkey construction, bridge construction, civil engineering and building refurbishment.

In the midst of industrialization and only a few years after the founding of the German Reich in 1871, Germany developed from an agricultural to an industrial country due to the enormous economic upswing. Factories and transportation routes had to be built.
Peeler construction - History
1880
In the young, imperial Germany, the imperial capital in particular was experiencing a strong construction and industrialization boom. The Berlin master builder Hermann Schäler recognized the signs of the times at that time and founded his “Specialist company for furnace and chimney construction”. He built steam boiler systems and the associated chimneys for the growing industry. The company flourished and soon the municipal works were among the company’s regular customers.
In the 1990s, Germany developed into the largest industrial nation in Europe until the beginning of the First World War.

Hermann Schäler dies. His wife and son sold his life’s work to the architect Erich Grundey. He expanded the company’s field of business by taking on larger industrial construction contracts and building complete commercial facilities. In the following years, SCHÄLERBAU increasingly gained the trust of large-scale industry. The continuous upswing was characterized by the construction of complete industrial plants and administrative buildings for large companies such as Knorr-Bremse AG, Allgemeine Electricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG) and Mercedes Benz.

Herrmann Schäler Holzverwertung - Peeler construction1923
Founding of Hermann Schäler AG für Holzverwertung, which, in addition to its own sawmill, also included a timber trade, a joinery and a woodworking factory.

At the end of the 1920s , the global economic crisis left its mark: the Hermann Schäler company had to reduce its workforce to around 200 men.
In the 1930s, the highway network in Germany began to be expanded. During this time, the “Hermann Schäler” company had to make further serious cuts.
The 1940s were overshadowed by work to clear the rubble. SCHÄLERBAU also faced an arduous reconstruction of the company. But the effort was worth it: years of growth followed.

The technical development in the construction industry and especially in the field of prefabrication progressed: SCHÄLERBAU became the world’s first licensee of the “all-concrete” construction method based on the bulkhead wall principle. This opened the door to turnkey construction and the urgently needed creation of new living space was now possible in a considerably shorter construction time.

Prefabricated shell construction History1950s / 60s
Acquisition of a number of turnkey construction contracts, particularly in residential, hostel and hotel construction in Germany and abroad, with own technical departments and precast plants in “all-concrete” construction method. At the time, Schälerbau not only carried out consultations and construction contracts in other European countries, but also in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, for example. As a traditional Berlin company, the company nevertheless remained true to its “very own” market. The focus here was on the classic fields of building construction and turnkey construction as well as refurbishment — from small detached houses to hotel, office, municipal and industrial buildings.

Corpus concrete room cells Peeler constructionThis was followed in the early 1960s by the development, manufacture and sale of a single-storey detached house made of prefabricated reinforced concrete elements, the so-called “Schäler-Bauherz house”. The core of this prefabricated house was a 10-ton, ready-to-use installation cell, consisting of a bathroom and toilet, kitchen wall with fitted kitchen, heating and hot water system and electrical control center — a once Swedish invention called “building heart”. SCHÄLERBAU Berlin was the first company in Germany to have its “Schäler-Bauherz-Hausincluded in the prefabricated house directory of the Federal Ministry of Housing.

This lays the foundation for today’s activities in the shipyard sector, with a focus on the construction, conversion and repair of inland waterway vessels.

ALFRED KUNZ

2003

ALFRED KUNZ BECOMES PART OF THE HEGEMANN GROUP

In 2003, the HEGEMANN GROUP takes over the tunnel construction company Alfred Kunz Untertagebau GmbH, founded in 1882. The innovative company, which has been characterized by many pioneering developments and process technologies throughout its history, once again expands the Group’s service portfolio and makes it a major provider of complex infrastructure measures.

In the mid-19th century,
Rudolf and Heinrich Kunz were talented master builders and ran a well-known construction company that was able to land major contracts early on. Heinrich quickly disappeared from the scene.

Rudolf Kunz dies, whereupon his son Alfred Kunz takes over his father’s business and initially continues it in Switzerland.

ALFRED KUNZ History1882
Alfred Kunz founded his company of the same name in Germany, where he initially built a small hydropower plant. Over time, the company’s field of activity expanded more and more. Larger projects followed, including the construction of railroads, bridges, hydraulic and industrial buildings.

The company increasingly focuses on foreign markets, including Italy, France and Turkey, and also expands its service portfolio to include tunnel construction, the main activity of ALFRED KUNZ today.
The name ALFRED KUNZ is closely associated with the history of construction through decisive developments in construction methods and equipment, such as the twin-shaft compulsory mixer, Kunz’sche Rüstung, or the mobile cable crane bridge.

2003
ALFRED KUNZ, based in Munich, is now part of the HEGEMANN GROUP. Even today, ALFRED KUNZ sees itself as an innovative specialist
in the realization of projects of all sizes.

MERGER OF THE CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES

In 2007, the individual construction companies of the HEGEMANN GROUP merged to form AUGUST REINERS Bauunternehmung GmbH, based in Bremen, with the now registered branches SCHÄLERBAU Berlin, ALFRED KUNZ Untertagebau and AUGUST REINERS Wolgast. In addition to its current size, the construction company is particularly impressive due to its versatility. In the field of construction and project development, this gives the group of companies the opportunity to handle almost any construction project itself.

THE GROUP REPOSITIONS ITSELF

In order to strengthen our competitiveness and make even better use of synergies, the Group will have a new external image. From now on, the HEGEMANN GROUP will become the HEGEMANN-REINERS GROUP. Our services will now be offered under two main brands, DETLEF HEGEMANN and AUGUST REINERS. We are thus moving away from the SCHÄLERBAU and ALFRED KUNZ brands and growing even closer together as AUGUST REINERS Bauunternehmung GmbH.
