A26 HARBOR RAILWAY TUNNEL HAMBURG: CONCRETING OF UNDERWATER CONCRETE BASE

At the beginning of August, by far the largest underwater concrete base in the history of AUGUST REINERS Bauunternehmung GmbH was produced. For this purpose, around 10,800 m³ of underwater concrete was continuously processed by a team of 15 professional divers at a depth of 8 m using the contractor pumping method. This corresponds to the mass of a soccer pitch, which is completely filled with 1.5 m of concrete.

The concreting took one week, with 1,500 concrete mixers being unloaded at the construction site. The site team spent months preparing the large concrete pour in a flooded excavation pit down to the smallest detail. This was the only way to ensure technical success.
The completion of the underwater concrete base also marks the start of the shell construction of the west side of the harbor railway tunnel of the new A26 freeway route in Hamburg. In the next step, the groundwater (40,000 m³) now trapped by the underwater concrete base will be pumped out of the excavation pit. After draining and cleaning, the excavation pit will be handed over to the concrete construction team.

Completion of the entire shell of the tunnel under the port railroad is scheduled for 2027. The next milestone is the relocation of the port railway line to the first three completed tunnel blocks and is expected to be reached in spring 2025.
